Building official certification

The Department of Labor and Industry is responsible for maintaining the building official certification and recertification program within the state, which includes reviewing applications for qualification, providing training for the "limited" and "accessibility" certifications and reviewing and approving building official continuing education units. The department also administers the certification examinations.

To be certified, the individual must meet the qualifying prerequisites in Minnesota Rule 1301.0300 and pass a written examination. Applicants who qualify for certification as a "building official-limited" or "accessibility specialist" are required to attend a course specified by the state building official. Applicants must complete and return the "Course enrollment form" and "Application for municipal building official certification" to participate in the course.

Please Note: The Department of Labor and Industry does not accept cash as payment for licenses, inspections, copy requests and other DLI services. Accepted methods of payment include checks, money orders and electronic payments that can be made through the DLI web site.

Recertification process

To be recertified, the individual must complete the required continuing education hours or credits set in Minnesota Rule 1301.0900 during the certification period and then submit the requisite renewal fee to the department. All continuing education hours and credits must be approved by DLI before they can be used to renew the certification.

A change by the Minnesota Legislature in the recertification process was implemented Oct. 3, 2011. Per Minnesota Statutes 326B.0981, building official seminars and institute courses must be approved by DLI before the courses are offered. Individuals attending approved courses will have their attendance reported to the department to be logged on their certification record. Once an individual's CE requirements have been met for recertification, the individual will be able to renew the certification simply by paying the renewal fee. Non-seminar activities that qualify for continuing education credits, per Minnesota Rule 1301.1000, may be submitted for renewal as in the past on the continuing education summary report.
